Mumbai, a bustling metropolis often grappling with environmental challenges, is taking a proactive approach to address the issue of pollution in its nullahs. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced plans to install 16 trash barge systems equipped with trash brooms in the major nullahs of the eastern suburbs. This innovative solution aims to prevent garbage from entering the sea and obstructing drainage outlets, thereby mitigating the risk of waterlogging.
The initiative comes in response to the pressing need to protect Mumbai’s coastal environment and ensure the smooth functioning of its drainage systems. During the monsoon season, heavy rainfall often leads to overflowing nullahs and flooding, resulting in significant inconvenience to residents and businesses. The installation of trash barges will play a crucial role in preventing these disruptions by capturing floating debris before it reaches the sea. The BMC has already made significant progress in implementing this project. The civic body has successfully installed nine trash broom systems at various locations across the city, demonstrating their effectiveness in removing floating waste.
These systems have been instrumental in preventing silt and garbage from accumulating on the water surface, thereby improving water quality and reducing the risk of pollution. The upcoming installation of 16 additional trash barges in the eastern suburbs represents a major expansion of this initiative. The BMC has received bids from various contractors and is expected to award the contract soon.
