Mumbai’s ambitious Coastal Road Project (MCRP) crossed a significant hurdle on Friday with the installation of a colossal 2,000-metric-tonne arch bridge.
This critical infrastructure component, fabricated in Ambala, Haryana, marks a major step forward in integrating the MCRP with the already operational Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL). The successful installation, overseen by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), signifies a triumph of meticulous planning and innovative engineering. The sheer scale of the girder – 136 metres long and spanning 18-21 metres wide – necessitated a unique approach. Pre-fabricated sections were meticulously transported from Ambala to Mazgaon Dock via a fleet of nearly 500 trailers. After assembly, the gargantuan structure was then ferried to its designated location near Worli from Nhava Sheva port. A key challenge involved synchronising the installation with favourable tidal conditions. The BMC’s engineering team meticulously monitored sea waves and wind patterns to ensure the barge carrying the girder could be strategically positioned for a seamless connection with both the MCRP and BWSL. This delicate operation, commencing at 2 am on Friday, culminated in the successful alignment of four “mating” units – two each on the MCRP and BWSL – by 3:25 am. This crucial milestone was met with jubilant celebrations by the project’s workforce, acknowledging the culmination of their relentless efforts.
The next phase involves the crucial task of fortifying the behemoth girder. Anti-corrosive C5 Japanese technology will be employed to ensure the structure’s resilience against the harsh marine environment. Additionally, advanced welding techniques will be utilised to create a seamless and robust connection between the pre-fabricated sections. The successful installation of this arch bridge represents a significant leap forward for the MCRP. It paves the way for the completion of the next phase of the coastal road, offering the potential to significantly improve traffic flow and connectivity within Mumbai. This infrastructural marvel, touted to be India’s longest arch bridge traversing the open sea upon completion, is a testament to the city’s commitment to modernisation and development.
