Mumbai’s Lakes Hit 93% Capacity

MUMBAI: Mumbai’s water reservoirs are nearing their full capacity, with current levels reaching 93.17% of their total storage potential, according to a recent report from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The city’s seven primary lakes, which collectively hold 13,48,520 million litres of water, have seen a significant increase in water levels due to the recent heavy rainfall. The reservoirs in question—Tulsi, Tansa, Vihar, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, and Middle Vaitarna—are crucial for supplying Mumbai with its drinking water. The latest data reveals that individual lake levels are as follows: Tansa Lake at 97.07%, Modak Sagar at 94.88%, Middle Vaitarna at 97.64%, Upper Vaitarna at 90.85%, Bhatsa at 91.28%, Vihar at full capacity (100%), and Tulsi at 98.74%.

The situation has been exacerbated by recent rainfall. Middle Vaitarna Lake began overflowing on July 4, followed by Vihar and Modak Sagar on July 25. On July 24, Tansa Lake also started to overflow, significantly boosting the water reserves across all seven reservoirs in a single day. Tansa Lake, located in the Shahpur region of Thane, contributes approximately 400 million gallons of water to Mumbai’s supply and overflowed on July 26.

Tulsi Lake, which is one of the two lakes that directly supply water to the BMC, began to overflow on July 20, mirroring a similar event from the previous year. The overflow of these lakes indicates an ample water supply, which is a crucial development given the city’s reliance on these reservoirs.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall for Mumbai, with a partly cloudy sky and potential thundershowers expected over the next 24 hours. The maximum temperature is projected to be 34°C, while the minimum will hover around 26°C. Additionally, the BMC has warned of high tides reaching about 4.51 metres at 11:45 am and 4.10 metres at 11:50 pm today, with a low tide of approximately 1.37 metres anticipated at 5:50 pm.
