The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has embarked on an ambitious beautification project to transform the iconic Kala Ghoda area into a pedestrian-friendly zone, set to feature cobblestone-paved lanes, enhanced landscaping, and improved lighting. This initiative is part of a broader plan to rejuvenate the area’s historic charm and make it more accessible to foot traffic.
The transformation follows a positive response to a trial run conducted in September, where the BMC restricted vehicular traffic on weekends in certain lanes. The public’s enthusiastic support during the trial phase encouraged the authorities to push ahead with permanent plans for the area’s makeover. Work on the project has already begun, starting with excavation in one of the five lanes earmarked for renovation. The lanes being revamped include V B Gandhi Marg (Forbes Street), Rope Walk Lane, Saibaba Road, Rutherfield Street, and B Bharucha Road. The cobblestone paving will aim to capture the essence of Kala Ghoda’s old-world charm, while also contributing to its modern transformation into a pedestrian-friendly hub. In addition to cobblestone streets, the beautification effort will include new landscaping elements, such as greenery and street furniture, along with the installation of fresh lighting poles to brighten up the area at night.
Despite delays caused by the monsoon season and local elections, the BMC has expressed confidence that the project will be completed by April 2025, with work proceeding in phases. Once construction on one lane is finished, the focus will shift to the next, ensuring minimal disruption. While the first phase of the project is moving ahead smoothly, a second phase is currently under consideration. This phase proposes the creation of a dedicated parking area to alleviate local traffic congestion, although the plan has yet to receive official approval. For now, the BMC has secured final approval from the traffic department, and vehicular movement has been halted in the lane currently under construction. The project is expected to significantly enhance the pedestrian experience in Kala Ghoda, making it a more attractive destination for both residents and tourists alike.
