Construction of the new multi-speciality tower at Mumbai’s Sir JJ Hospital — Maharashtra’s oldest medical college and a critical public healthcare institution — has entered its final phase, marking a major milestone in the state’s medical infrastructure upgrade. The upcoming facility, featuring ten upper floors and two basement levels, is set to be operational by the end of 2025, providing advanced care to thousands of patients daily.
Designed as a modern medical complex, the structure comprises four interconnected blocks (A, B, C, and D), with each serving a distinct function within the hospital ecosystem. According to officials, reinforced cement concrete work has been completed for three of the four blocks, with interior finishing, fire safety systems, plumbing, and electrical fittings currently in progress. Block D, which houses advanced surgical and diagnostic units, has reached terrace slab completion and is undergoing mechanical and interior installations. The new tower will significantly expand JJ Hospital’s capacity, enabling the integration of multi-disciplinary specialities under one roof. Blocks A and B will host outpatient departments (OPDs), intensive care units (ICUs), and inpatient wards. Seven ICUs will operate across two floors, while inpatient and nursing facilities will occupy higher levels. Blocks C and D are dedicated to diagnostics and surgeries, housing a Cath Lab Complex for cardiac procedures, modular operation theatres, and advanced units for dialysis, endoscopy, and chemotherapy.
Basement areas have been designed to optimise operational efficiency, housing parking for over 350 vehicles, engineering systems, a mortuary, a central sterile services department (CSSD), and specialised departments for radiation therapy and nuclear medicine. The design also includes water and waste management zones, ensuring compliance with sustainable building practices. Officials emphasised that the redevelopment aligns with the city’s long-term healthcare resilience and sustainability goals. The new facility aims to adopt energy-efficient systems, improved air circulation, and waste segregation measures to create a safe, patient-friendly environment. “This expansion marks an important shift towards integrated, sustainable healthcare infrastructure,” said a senior public health official involved in the project.
The project is expected to not only enhance Mumbai’s public healthcare capacity but also relieve pressure on other major hospitals. Experts noted that such investments are critical as the city’s population density and healthcare demand continue to grow. Once complete, JJ Hospital’s new facility will symbolise Mumbai’s transition toward future-ready, equitable, and inclusive medical care for all citizens.
