Mumbai’s proposed bird park in Nahur Village an eyewash over wildlife protection, alleges experts

The proposed establishment of a bird park in Nahur village, Mumbai, has ignited a debate among wildlife experts. While the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to develop the aviary on two municipal plots, environmentalists argue that the focus should be on providing essential facilities for wildlife conservation. Pawan Sharma, president of the NGO ‘Rescue Association for Welfare’ (RAW), has submitted objections to the BMC’s plan, emphasizing the need for wildlife rescue centers, animal birth control centers, orphanages, and crematoriums.

He contends that these facilities would address the pressing needs of animals and birds in the region. Sharma’s objections highlight the increasing rates of smuggling and poaching in the area. He stresses the importance of taking concrete measures to combat these illegal activities and protect wildlife. Additionally, he emphasizes the need to create a balanced environment for birds to thrive. The proposed aviary, if realized, would be the first of its kind in Mumbai’s suburbs. It would feature separate sections for birds from different countries, providing visitors with a unique experience.

However, wildlife experts believe that the city’s priorities should lie in addressing the immediate needs of animals and birds, rather than constructing a new aviary. The BMC has initiated the process of appointing a management consultant to oversee the aviary project. The consultant will be responsible for preparing the layout, detailed project report, and supervising the construction. Obtaining approval from the Central Zoo Authority and selecting appropriate bird species are also crucial steps in the project. The debate over the aviary proposal underscores the complex challenges faced by urban areas in balancing development with environmental conservation. While the aviary could potentially contribute to public awareness and education about wildlife, it is essential to prioritize the immediate needs of animals and birds in the region.
