Mumbais Goregaon Mulund Link Road Tunnel Work Set To Begin Soon
Mumbai’s vital Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project is poised to begin its main construction phase next month, signaling a major step in connecting the city’s western and eastern suburbs. This crucial infrastructure initiative, overseen by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), aims to drastically cut travel time from 75 minutes to just 25 minutes. Preparatory work is already underway, with the commencement of the ambitious twin tunnel boring set to start after the arrival of the final Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) parts from Japan.
The highlight of the ambitious Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project, estimated at approximately ₹6,500 crore, is the construction of two 6.65-kilometer-long twin tunnels. These tunnels will commence at Film City in Goregaon and emerge near Amar Junction in Mulund, carving their path beneath the challenging terrain of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Each tunnel will be a massive 14.5 meters wide, designed to significantly improve east-west connectivity. The tunneling work will utilize two enormous Tunnel Boring Machines, components of which are arriving in shipments from Japan. So far, 54 out of 77 trailers carrying TBM parts have reached Mumbai, with the remaining 23 expected by August 15. Once all components are on site, engineers anticipate a four-month assembly period for the first TBM at a launch shaft near Film City. Simultaneously, piling and shaft preparation works are progressing to ensure readiness for the parallel boring operations, with the entire GMLR project targeted for completion by 2028.
Across Mumbai, the impending start of tunnel boring for the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road marks a significant milestone in urban infrastructure development. This ambitious project promises to enhance connectivity and alleviate chronic traffic congestion. Its completion is anticipated to redefine travel efficiency between the city’s key suburban areas, benefiting thousands of daily commuters.
