Mumbai’s First GBS Death Raises Alarming Questions
In a significant and worrying development, Mumbai has reported its first death attributed to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare and often debilitating neurological disorder. A 53-year-old male resident from Wadala, who worked at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s BN Desai Hospital, passed away after battling the illness for several days.
The patient was receiving treatment at Nair Hospital, Mumbai, but was unable to overcome the illness. This marks a troubling milestone in the state’s ongoing battle with GBS, as the number of confirmed cases continues to rise in Maharashtra, particularly in the Pune region. In Pune, the situation is far more severe, with reports of 197 confirmed GBS cases and seven fatalities. The city has emerged as the epicentre of the outbreak, with a disturbing increase in the number of affected individuals. The latest figures show that five new cases were reported, pushing the overall count even higher. GBS, a condition that impacts the nervous system, has been a growing cause for concern, with more residents being diagnosed daily.
The central government has swiftly intervened, issuing comprehensive guidelines aimed at controlling the spread of GBS. A multi-disciplinary team of experts from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has been deployed to assist the state in managing the crisis. The team includes specialists from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), NIMHANS Bengaluru, and the National Institute for Virology (NIV), Pune. This strategic mobilisation reflects the urgency with which the situation is being addressed.
The guidelines provided focus primarily on managing patient care, streamlining public health measures, and facilitating coordination between various local health authorities. The state government, particularly the Pune Municipal Corporation, has been working closely with these experts to enhance their response and ensure that the spread of GBS is curbed.
