Mumbai’s First Cable-Stayed Overbridge at Reay Road Opens, Enhancing City’s Infrastructure

Mumbai’s first cable-stayed road overbridge at Reay Road station is now fully operational, marking a significant milestone in the city’s infrastructure development. Completed in just two years, this six-lane bridge includes a dedicated pedestrian footpath and stands as one of the fastest-built overbridges in the country. The construction of the Reay Road overbridge began on February 14, 2022, as part of a broader initiative by the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) to replace aging British-era bridges. Valued at ₹2.73 billion, the project spans 385 meters and is designed to alleviate congestion and improve traffic flow, with two down ramps and a 1.52-kilometer stretch aimed at easing congestion and enhancing safety.

The Reay Road Cable-Stayed Bridge boasts several notable features, including six lanes for vehicle traffic, a dedicated pedestrian footpath, and compliance with Indian Road Congress standards for sufficient vertical clearance. It also features architectural LED lighting to enhance the bridge’s aesthetics and improve visibility for night-time users. A bridge health monitoring system has been integrated to provide real-time data on the bridge’s structural integrity, ensuring enhanced safety for all users. These features cater to the growing demands of modern traffic in Mumbai, ensuring seamless flow and reduced congestion on one of the city’s busiest routes. The completion of this bridge is a key part of Mumbai’s ongoing transformation, aligning with other infrastructure projects at Byculla, Dadar, and Ghatkopar. It will significantly improve traffic flow by providing efficient routes and better connectivity across the city, especially through the Barrister Nath Pai Road underpass. With its modern design and cutting-edge features, the Reay Road Cable-Stayed Bridge is set to become an iconic part of Mumbai’s skyline, contributing to the city’s vision of modernization and urban mobility. This new overpass symbolizes Mumbai’s commitment to improving infrastructure and supporting the growing needs of its residents.
