Mumbai’s Coastal Road Now Reaches Bhayandar

The ambitious Coastal Road project is set to extend its reach beyond its original scope. Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has announced that the project, initially designed to connect Marine Lines in South Mumbai with Kandivali in the western suburbs, will now stretch further north to Bhayandar in the Thane district.

This extension represents a substantial leap towards realising the project’s original vision of a comprehensive sea-facing roadway stretching along Mumbai’s western coastline. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is at the forefront of this transformative endeavour, partnering with the central government to ensure the successful delivery of the extended Coastal Road. The BMC’s oversight will be crucial in managing the construction phases and ensuring the project meets its deadlines and quality standards.

To facilitate the progress of this extensive infrastructure project, the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change are engaged in discussions to expedite the necessary environmental clearances. The project is expected to be executed in multiple phases, with construction divided into four to five manageable segments. This segmented approach is intended to streamline progress and address logistical challenges effectively. The extended Coastal Road promises significant benefits for Mumbai’s residents. By bridging the gap between South Mumbai and Bhayandar, the new link is anticipated to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce travel times, and offer a more streamlined commuting experience.

The improved connectivity is likely to ease daily travel for thousands and provide a more efficient route for both personal and commercial transport. Beyond its immediate impact on traffic and commuting, the Coastal Road extension is expected to unlock substantial economic opportunities. Enhanced connectivity could spur economic activity in the Thane district and surrounding areas, contributing to broader regional development. This expansion represents a crucial milestone in Mumbai’s ongoing efforts to modernise its infrastructure and improve the quality of urban life.
