Mumbai’s BMC sanctions ₹32.64 cr bridge rebuilds in Kandivali Malad

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has sanctioned a comprehensive plan for the reconstruction of seven deteriorating bridges in Mumbai’s densely populated western suburbs of Kandivali and Malad. This ₹32.64 crore initiative, slated for completion within two years, directly addresses pressing safety concerns and aims to significantly enhance mobility for thousands of daily commuters, underscoring the city’s commitment to building a more resilient, safe, and equitable urban environment for its residents.

The ambitious project entails the demolition and subsequent reconstruction of three vital vehicular bridges and four crucial foot overbridges (FOBs) situated across the R/South and P/North wards. Two of the vehicular bridges targeted for redevelopment are Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) structures, located near Appa Pada and the Surbhi Complex in Sainagar, Kandivali East. Among the pedestrian crossings, structures near Ramnagar Chawl, Narvane Transit Camp, Gavdevi Road, and the Mahalakshmi Dairy Farm in Hanuman Nagar are prioritised, with at least two of these FOBs already fully closed due to severe safety risks, highlighting the urgency of this civic intervention.

The decision to embark on this large-scale reconstruction follows a series of rigorous structural audits. Initial evaluations by SCG Consulting Services revealed the alarming condition of these bridges, a finding that was unequivocally reaffirmed by Structronics Consulting Engineers during a reassessment in 2023. Both expert firms concluded that the affected structures had deteriorated beyond repair and necessitated complete demolition and rebuilding. Subsequently, Femstruct Consulting Engineers were appointed as technical consultants to meticulously draft the project blueprint, including conceptual designs, detailed cost estimates, and tender documentation.

Funding for this vital infrastructure upgrade has been strategically integrated into the BMC’s substantial ₹8,238.73 crore budget allocated for broader infrastructure development in the fiscal year 2025–26. This comprehensive capital outlay demonstrates the civic body’s proactive stance on investing in essential public works, moving beyond reactive repairs to long-term sustainable solutions. The reconstruction, inclusive of consultancy fees, is expected to dramatically improve safety and streamline daily commutes in the Kandivali and Malad belt, areas characterised by heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

The dilapidated state of urban infrastructure, particularly bridges, often reflects years of exposure to environmental factors like the corrosive Mumbai climate, coupled with increasing traffic loads beyond original design capacities. This reconstruction project, while presenting temporary disruptions, is paramount for the safety and well-being of the city’s populace and critical for maintaining efficient urban mobility. By investing in robust, modern bridge infrastructure, Mumbai is not merely replacing old structures; it is fundamentally investing in the future livability and economic vitality of its suburban communities, ensuring safer, more accessible, and ultimately more equitable transit pathways for every citizen.
