Mumbai’s AC Local Train to Feature Underslung Motor System
In a significant stride towards enhancing Mumbai’s public transport infrastructure, Central Railway is poised to introduce its first air-conditioned local trains equipped with an underslung motor system. Expected to roll out by early summer, this new addition aims to revolutionise the commuter experience by offering increased space and more efficient functionality.
The underslung motor design, where essential electrical components and motors are installed beneath the coaches, promises to significantly improve the available passenger space within the train carriages. This configuration, already successfully implemented by Western Railway, offers better space optimisation, an essential feature for Mumbai’s overcrowded local trains. As a result, the new trains will be able to accommodate 1,116 passengers, a significant increase from the previous capacity of 1,028 seats. In addition, the standing capacity remains at 4,936 passengers, ensuring that the trains can effectively manage high volumes during peak hours.
The new AC local trains, with their striking blue-and-silver livery, are currently stationed at the Kurla carshed, undergoing rigorous testing and inspection to ensure reliability and safety. This train will join Central Railway’s fleet of six existing AC locals, with the new addition marking the first expansion in two years. With the addition of this train, the fleet is expected to serve as a backup during maintenance, addressing the issue of cancellations that frequently affect services during peak weekends. However, officials have clarified that the introduction of this new train will not immediately increase the frequency of AC services. While this may not directly improve the number of services, it will undoubtedly improve operational efficiency by ensuring that cancellations are minimised when repairs are necessary.
The introduction of underslung AC trains is a crucial development for the city’s rail network. Yet, officials are keen to evaluate the performance of these trains under different weather conditions, particularly during the monsoon. Central Railway’s tracks are notably at a lower level compared to Western Railway’s, which makes them more susceptible to waterlogging during heavy rains. The authorities are actively assessing the impact of such conditions on train operations to ensure seamless functionality year-round. In essence, the launch of these innovative AC locals with their underslung design is an important milestone in Central Railway’s efforts to modernise Mumbai’s rail transport system. Though it may take time to fully realise the benefits, the move signals a promising shift towards a more comfortable and reliable public transport future for the city.
