More than 120 local train services are scheduled to be withdrawn over the two days, affecting one of the city’s most densely used commuter corridors and underscoring the short-term strain that long-term rail expansion places on daily urban mobility.
Railway operations planners have confirmed that around 60 services in each direction will not run on both days. The cancellations form part of a larger, month-long programme of night-time engineering blocks that began in late December and will continue until mid-January. The works are linked to the construction of an additional railway line, aimed at easing chronic congestion on the western suburban network. The Kandivali–Borivali stretch is a critical bottleneck, carrying hundreds of thousands of commuters each day from northern suburbs into Mumbai’s employment hubs. Urban transport experts note that while such disruptions are inconvenient, suburban rail remains the most energy-efficient mass transport system in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Capacity augmentation projects like the sixth line are viewed as essential to accommodate future population growth, reduce overcrowding, and prevent a shift towards more polluting road-based travel. However, planners also stress the importance of clear passenger communication and multimodal coordination during prolonged block periods.
