Mumbai Weather Brings Moderate Rain High Humidity And AQI At 60 Today

Mumbai woke up to yet another damp morning on September 17 as steady rainfall combined with high humidity shaped the city’s daily rhythm. Temperatures hovered between 26°C and 28.8°C, while the air remained heavy with an 80 per cent humidity level. The day’s forecast suggests a 97 per cent chance of showers, supported by wind speeds of 15.1 km/h and visibility of 8.6 km. Air quality remains moderate at an index of 60, offering some relief compared to earlier polluted weeks.

Weather officials indicated that while the morning hours may allow for short walks and outdoor routines, commuters are advised to carry umbrellas and masks as heavier rainfall is expected in the afternoon. The persistent dampness has made the air sticky, adding to the discomfort of residents already grappling with longer travel times during wet spells. The city’s air quality index, while moderate, reflects an improvement in overall urban atmosphere. Yesterday’s AQI readings stood at 60 on Indian standards and 79 on US standards. Primary pollutants included PM2.5 at 24 µg/m³ and PM10 at 59 µg/m³, both within tolerable levels. Carbon monoxide levels were also recorded at 460 µg/m³. Experts note that regular spells of rain have helped wash away suspended particles, leading to cleaner skies and slightly fresher air.

For residents, the advice is to adapt sensibly to the sultry conditions. Light, breathable fabrics are recommended to offset the stickiness of the day. While visibility remains reasonable at 8.6 km, the continuous showers could affect evening commutes. With average daily temperatures settling around 27.4°C, the comfort index remains moderate but could worsen during peak humidity phases. The week ahead looks to continue on this wet trajectory. September 18 and 19 are likely to bring patchy rainfall and moderate showers, pushing temperatures between 26.3°C and 29.1°C. September 20 and 21 could see a blend of rain and overcast conditions, leading to cooler temperatures and some respite. September 21, in particular, stands out as a more favourable day for outdoor activities as forecasts point to a lower chance of rain.

However, the concluding days of the week, September 22 and 23, will continue with lighter rainfall but high humidity, ranging between 72 and 74 per cent. The extended wet spell not only underscores the monsoon’s persistence but also signals how natural rain cycles are contributing to improved air quality. For Mumbai, this balance of rainfall and cleaner air offers a silver lining in an otherwise humid and testing September week.
