Mumbai Weather Alert: Cloudy Conditions, Rainfall Likely Throughout Day

Mumbai is likely to witness continued cloudy weather and scattered spells of light to moderate rain across the city and suburbs on Friday, as per the latest forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Amid these weather conditions, civic officials have also raised an advisory for residents in low-lying areas with high tides expected in the evening.

According to data shared by IMD observatories, the Santacruz centre recorded a maximum temperature of 30.4°C and a minimum of 26.9°C. Meanwhile, the Colaba observatory reported slightly lower extremes, with a maximum of 29.6°C and a minimum of 26.5°C, indicative of a consistent moist and cloudy atmosphere across the region. Tidal activity remains a concern with high tide expected at 4:27 PM, peaking at 3.44 metres. A low tide is forecasted around 10:49 PM with a water level of 1.57 metres. On Saturday, tides will peak again early morning at 5:36 AM, reaching 3.18 metres, followed by a lesser low tide at 11:14 AM. Civic authorities have urged citizens, especially in flood-prone and coastal areas, to remain vigilant during these periods.

In positive news for the city, the seven reservoirs supplying Mumbai with drinking water have collectively reached 88.70 percent of their total capacity, thanks to recent rainfall in the catchment areas. This is a significant uptick and offers some reassurance regarding the city’s water security amid an unpredictable monsoon. According to municipal data, the total water stock now stands at over 12.81 lakh million litres. Among the major lakes, Modak Sagar has reached 100 percent capacity, followed by Tansa at 98.29 percent and Middle Vaitarna at 96.17 percent. Even Upper Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vihar, and Tulsi have maintained healthy reserves, ranging between 72 and 85 percent.

The supply systems are designed such that the Modak Sagar and Vaitarna series provide for the western belt of the city, while the Bhatsa system supports the eastern suburbs. Water is routed through the Panjarpur Water Treatment Plant before reaching households across Mumbai. Weather officials note that while the intensity of rainfall may taper off slightly over the weekend, intermittent showers cannot be ruled out. Thunderstorms and lightning remain likely in some parts of the state, particularly in areas within the Vidarbha region.

While the lake levels offer relief from the pressure on municipal water supply, officials continue to encourage prudent use of resources. The focus remains on preparedness and public awareness as the city navigates peak monsoon conditions. The city’s resilience will depend on continued coordination between weather agencies and civic systems, particularly during tide hours and spells of heavy rain.
