Mumbai Water Supply Disrupted As BMC Delays Amar Mahal Pipeline Connection Work

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced an unexpected delay in the critical cross-connection work at the Amar Mahal underground tunnel, extending the linkage of the 2,500 mm pipeline between tunnels 1 and 2. The work, initially scheduled to be completed within a 30-hour window from Monday morning, has now extended by several hours, leaving multiple city wards facing water shortages and disrupted supply.

A senior BMC official stated that the delay is due to technical difficulties in stabilising the pipeline connection. “Once the linkage is complete, the newly connected pipeline will be activated in phases. This staggered approach is necessary to maintain system pressure and prevent immediate hydraulic stress across the network,” the official added. The disruption has affected numerous areas including Colaba, Churchgate, Dongri, Marine Lines, Byculla, Parel, Wadala, Sion, Mankhurd, Deonar, Chembur, Kurla, Bhandup, and Ghatkopar. While some zones have received intermittent low-pressure supply, others have been completely without water since Monday. Residents have reported challenges in daily routines, with many relying on bottled water for drinking purposes. A Kurla resident noted the uncertainty of supply restoration despite prior preparations.

The BMC clarified that gradual restoration across all divisions will follow immediately after the phased activation of the pipeline, aiming for minimal disruption to citizens. The project forms part of broader water distribution improvement initiatives, which include connecting a 900 mm pipeline near the Western Express Highway to an existing line and decommissioning an older pipeline near Thakur Sankul Gate. Industry experts highlight that while such pipeline upgrades are critical for enhancing long-term water security, the immediate impact on residents underscores the importance of contingency planning, public communication, and sustainable water management practices. “Urban water infrastructure in a growing megacity must balance urgent maintenance with citizen convenience. Proper phased activation helps mitigate risks but requires timely communication,” said a senior urban infrastructure consultant.

The BMC is coordinating with local authorities to ensure smooth restoration and has emphasised that work will continue efficiently while adhering to safety and technical protocols. Officials also encouraged residents to monitor updates through official channels to plan water usage responsibly.
