Mumbai Unveils Iconic Cable Bridge

Mumbai today inaugurated its first cable-stayed railway overbridge (RoB) at Reay Road.

Constructed at a cost of ₹266 crore, this architectural marvel promises to be a vital artery in the city’s transportation network. Simultaneously, another crucial RoB at Titwala in the neighbouring Thane district was also inaugurated, marking a concerted effort to enhance connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The Reay Road overbridge replaces a century-old structure, built in 1910, which had outlived its functional lifespan, causing considerable inconvenience to commuters. The Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), also known as MahaRail, a collaborative venture between the Maharashtra government and the Ministry of Railways, spearheaded the reconstruction project. Notably, the task was completed with impressive efficiency, ensuring minimal disruption to the city’s relentless traffic flow.

The newly inaugurated six-lane cable-stayed RoB at Reay Road, a striking visual addition to Mumbai’s skyline, was meticulously constructed after the demolition of its British-era predecessor. Spanning 385 metres, the bridge features two ramps on each side of the Harbour line railway corridor, seamlessly linking the east and west along the Sant Savata Mali Marg, connecting Reay Road and Dockyard Road stations. Its strategic location also allows it to pass gracefully beneath the Eastern Freeway, further enhancing its role in the city’s intricate transportation grid. Adding to its functional significance, the Reay Road RoB is adorned with aesthetically pleasing architectural LED lighting, transforming it into a landmark that blends utility with visual appeal. Rajesh Kumar Jaiswal, the Managing Director of MahaRail, emphasized the transformative impact of these newly constructed RoBs, stating that they are designed to significantly improve road safety and alleviate the persistent issue of traffic congestion in both Mumbai and Thane. The result, he affirmed, would be a smoother, faster, and more efficient transportation experience for the multitude of commuters who rely on these vital links daily.

Jaiswal further highlighted the Reay Road RoB as Mumbai’s inaugural cable-stayed bridge, a testament to MahaRail’s commitment to enhancing the connectivity, safety, and overall efficiency of the city’s transportation network. Complementing this achievement, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has constructed a four-lane RoB at the new Titwala railway station. This 820-metre-long bridge, built at a cost of ₹100.06 crore, is strategically located on the Kalyan Ring Road, between Titwala and Khadavli railway stations on the Central Railway’s Kalyan-Igatpuri section. This new infrastructure will provide crucial connectivity between Ambivili and Kalyan, notably via the Shree Siddhivinayak Ganesh Mandir at Titwala, catering to the growing transportation needs of the region. MahaRail is currently undertaking an ambitious project to construct over 200 RoBs and railway underbridges (RuBs) across Maharashtra, with 32 such projects already commissioned. These ongoing efforts underscore a sustained commitment to upgrading the state’s transportation infrastructure, fostering better connectivity, reducing travel times, and ultimately contributing to the development of more efficient and equitable urban and regional mobility networks. The inauguration of these two significant overbridges in Mumbai and Thane marks a tangible step forward in this crucial endeavour, promising tangible benefits for the daily lives of countless commuters.
