Mumbai Unveils Assistance Scheme for Disabled

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has introduced the ‘Dharmaveer Anand Dighe Divyang Financial Assistance’ scheme aimed at enhancing the quality of life for disabled individuals residing within its jurisdiction. This initiative, in collaboration with the Maharashtra government, is designed to provide substantial financial support to those with disabilities over the next five years.

The scheme will provide financial assistance ranging from INR 6,000 to INR 18,000 every six months to approximately 60,000 disabled residents. This translates to a monthly aid of INR 1,000 to INR 3,000, depending on the degree of disability. The BMC has allocated an annual budget of INR 111.83 crore to support this initiative, demonstrating a strong commitment to improving the lives of its disabled population.

Under this scheme, individuals with disabilities will be classified into two categories based on the severity of their condition. Those with disabilities ranging from 40% to 80% will receive INR 1,000 per month, amounting to INR 12,000 annually. Meanwhile, individuals with disabilities exceeding 80% will benefit from a higher support of INR 3,000 per month, which totals INR 36,000 annually. The financial aid is intended to address various needs, including medical expenses, proper nutrition, and general living costs, thereby reducing the financial burden on individuals and families.

To qualify for the assistance, applicants must possess a yellow or blue Universal Identity Card (UIAD CARD), which serves as proof of their disability. The application process is open and accessible through the BMC’s official website, where eligible individuals can find the application form and detailed eligibility criteria. There is no set deadline for application submission, allowing potential beneficiaries ample time to apply. This initiative is guided by the Additional Municipal Commissioner (Western Suburbs) and is anticipated to cover 40-80% of Mumbai’s disabled population.
