Mumbai Train Operations Disrupted for 9 Hours After Overhead Electric Wire Snaps Near Nashik

Rail traffic between Mumbai and Bhusawal was brought to a halt for over nine hours early Sunday morning after an overhead electric wire snapped between Devlali and Nashik Road. The breakdown severely impacted train operations along this critical Central Railway corridor, resulting in multiple delays, diversions, and one cancellation, affecting thousands of passengers.

The incident occurred at around 2 am when the overhead equipment (OHE) wire failed just after a long-distance express train had crossed the section. Officials confirmed that services on the ‘down’ track—towards Bhusawal—were suspended immediately. Due to the high volume of inbound traffic during early morning hours, trains on the ‘up’ track—towards Mumbai—were also halted to ensure operational safety, resulting in a complete service paralysis until 9.30 am. Central Railway’s technical team was dispatched to the site soon after the fault was reported. Restoration work commenced without delay and was completed by 11 am. However, the disruption had a cascading effect on the morning rail schedule. Three long-distance trains were held up at intermediate stations, while four others had to be rerouted via alternative tracks.

To mitigate commuter distress, railway authorities deployed emergency support teams across Nashik Road, Lahavit, and Manmad stations. Catering units provided packaged drinking water, biscuits, and basic refreshments to stranded passengers on halted trains including Shalimar Express, Howrah Mail, and Devgiri Express. Among the diverted services were key trains like the Mumbai-Howrah Gitanjali Express, LTT Azamgarh Express, and Tulsi Express, rerouted via Vasai Road and Surat to avoid the affected section. The Sainagar Shirdi Vande Bharat Express took a longer detour through Pune to reach its destination. Two trains were rescheduled by nearly four hours to streamline traffic once normalcy was restored. Railway officials at Nashik Road confirmed that no passengers were injured and safety remained uncompromised throughout the disruption.

“Given the complexity of the electric traction systems and the surge in morning train traffic, a temporary full-stop on both tracks was essential,” said a senior operations expert from the Bhusawal division. The Central Railway also cancelled the local MEMU service between Devlali and Bhusawal, a crucial short-distance connection, to accommodate restoration work and reduce congestion. While railways are pivotal to sustainable and low-emission mobility in India, such disruptions expose vulnerabilities in ageing infrastructure. Experts believe that investment in modernising traction lines and predictive maintenance could help avoid such breakdowns in future, ensuring smoother intercity travel on green transport corridors like Mumbai-Nashik-Bhusawal.

With rising demand for reliable and uninterrupted train travel, especially on industrial and passenger-heavy corridors, maintaining infrastructure resilience remains a top priority for Indian Railways. The incident has once again highlighted the need for agile disaster response and passenger care systems across the network.
