Mumbai Traffic Advisory Lists Curbs For Ganeshotsav 2025 Processions And Routes

Mumbai is preparing for its grandest cultural celebration, Ganeshotsav 2025, with the city’s traffic police rolling out an extensive advisory to manage the surge in crowds, vehicles, and processions from 27 August. With heavy rains compounding congestion, the measures are aimed at ensuring safety, smoother movement, and minimal disruption across the metropolis during the ten-day festival.

According to officials, several arterial roads in the eastern and western suburbs including Chembur, Trombay, Chunabhatti, Kandivali, and Goregaon will witness temporary restrictions. Heavy vehicles have been barred from entry on key corridors such as Sion-Panvel Highway, LBS Road, JVLR Road, and Madh-Marve Road, which are expected to face maximum pressure during immersion processions.

The advisory also places strong emphasis on safety while crossing the city’s ageing railway overbridges. Restrictions will limit the number of devotees to 100 at a time, while dancing, halting, or using loudspeakers on these structures has been prohibited. Bridges at Ghatkopar, Curry Road, Byculla, Chinchpokli, and Prabhadevi have been identified for strict monitoring, with the Shiv (Sion) bridge closed altogether. Authorities note that past accidents on such bridges necessitate stringent precautionary steps this year.

To further ease congestion, no-parking zones have been marked across immersion routes, including Devde Road, Juhu Tara Road, and Oshiwara Nala, which will also see complete closures on immersion days. Citizens have been urged to rely on public transport as the preferred mode of travel and to plan routes well in advance to avoid bottlenecks.

The measures reflect a broader attempt to make urban mobility safer and more sustainable during festivals. Officials argue that efficient traffic management not only reduces delays but also prevents additional emissions caused by idling vehicles stuck in prolonged jams. This aligns with Mumbai’s longer-term vision of equitable and climate-conscious urban planning, where cultural traditions are celebrated without compromising environmental or commuter safety.Experts point out that the city has historically struggled to balance religious festivities with infrastructural constraints.
