Mumbai Toll Plaza Shift Proposed To Cut Congestion And Pollution

Mumbai’s primary entry point from the north could soon see a major change, with the state transport department seeking the relocation of the Dahisar toll plaza two kilometres ahead, near a key landmark hotel. The move, officials say, aims to tackle chronic traffic jams, reduce vehicle emissions, and enhance commuter convenience for the over 1.5 million people travelling daily between Mira-Bhayander and Mumbai.

Located at the entrance of Mira-Bhayander, the current toll plaza sits inside municipal limits, creating a bottleneck for both private and commercial vehicles entering the metropolitan region. According to officials, the static queues not only cause prolonged travel delays but also lead to significant fuel wastage as vehicles idle in slow-moving lanes. The cumulative environmental impact, they warn, is substantial, with emissions from thousands of stationary engines contributing to the city’s deteriorating air quality. The proposal to shift the toll plaza further ahead is part of a broader push towards sustainable and efficient urban mobility. Senior officials argue that relocating the facility outside the densely populated municipal zone would allow smoother traffic dispersal, lowering the risk of peak-hour gridlocks. The adjustment is also expected to provide measurable relief for local residents whose daily commutes are frequently disrupted.

Experts in urban transport highlight that this is not the first time Maharashtra has reassessed its toll infrastructure. In previous years, several toll plazas within city limits were shut down, and exemptions were granted for small vehicles. These measures were widely welcomed by the public for reducing travel costs and improving journey times. However, the Dahisar point has remained a persistent trouble spot, given its strategic location on the arterial route linking Mumbai to the western suburbs and beyond. Environmental advocates note that the benefits of such a relocation extend beyond convenience. Shorter idling times translate directly into lower carbon emissions, contributing to the state’s climate goals. A two-kilometre shift, they argue, may seem minor in distance but could have a marked impact on cumulative air quality improvements over time, especially in densely populated urban corridors.

Officials have confirmed that a meeting with key stakeholders, including municipal representatives and transport planners, will soon be held to evaluate the operational feasibility and cost implications of the shift. While there is optimism that the relocation will be approved, the final decision will hinge on balancing revenue considerations with long-term sustainability benefits. For commuters, the anticipated outcome is clear: less time in queues, lower fuel bills, and cleaner air. If executed effectively, the toll plaza shift could mark a significant step towards making Mumbai’s gateways more efficient, environmentally responsible, and commuter-friendly.
