Mumbai is preparing to launch its much-anticipated roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ferry service to Konkan, a move that promises to slash travel times to Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg while offering commuters a greener and more efficient alternative to the road. From September 1, the Mumbai-to-Jaigad route will be covered in just three to four hours compared to the eight to ten hours required by road.
Officials said the ferry service, which follows the success of the Mumbai–Alibaug link, will redefine coastal connectivity. “This sea link will serve as an extension of the Mumbai-Goa Highway and Konkan Railway, creating a sustainable and time-efficient option for passengers and tourists,” one senior official explained. The ferry has been designed to accommodate both passengers and vehicles, allowing seamless onward journeys upon reaching Konkan. It can carry up to 50 cars, 30 two-wheelers and even bicycles, offering an option that blends convenience with sustainability. For commuters, the ferry offers four travel categories – Economy priced at ₹2,500, Premium at ₹4,000, Business at ₹7,500 and First Class at ₹9,000. Vehicle fares are pegged at ₹6,000 per car, ₹1,000 per two-wheeler and ₹600 per bicycle.
Industry experts note that the RoRo service will not only support passenger traffic but also reduce congestion and emissions on the Mumbai-Goa Highway. With ferry journeys requiring less fuel consumption compared to road convoys, the service supports India’s push for greener, carbon-efficient modes of transport. The maiden journey of the ferry will start at Bhau Cha Dhakka at 6:30 am, reaching Jaigad before extending further to Vijaydurg in Sindhudurg. Return journeys will be timed after short stopovers. In the first phase, the ferry will cover Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, with plans to extend the service to Shrivardhan and Mandwa, creating a wider maritime corridor.
Transport analysts point out that such services also hold potential for tourism-led economic growth along the Konkan belt. With quicker travel times and improved accessibility, the coastal towns could see a surge in investments in hospitality, leisure and eco-tourism. The RoRo service underscores a long-term vision of integrating water-based mobility into Maharashtra’s transport mix. While weather delays had initially postponed the launch, improved conditions have cleared the way for operations. As the ferry service takes off, residents and businesses alike anticipate reduced travel stress, greater regional connectivity and a greener footprint for future journeys.
