Mumbai To Probe Kanjurmarg Dumping Ground Issues After Citizen Complaints On July 11

In Mumbai, a high-power committee will be formed to investigate the Kanjurmarg dumping ground issue, following persistent complaints from citizens regarding waste management. Announced by a Minister in the state assembly on Friday, July 11, the probe targets alleged lapses by the contractor in fulfilling operational and odour management terms. This critical action aims to address severe health and environmental concerns, including air pollution, impacting local residents, signifying a firm stance against non-compliance for effective urban waste disposal.

The committee’s formation comes in the wake of continuous grievances concerning the waste management process at the Kanjurmarg site. In 2011, M/s Anthony Lara Enviro Solution Private Limited was awarded a 25-year contract for the Kanjur Dumping Project. However, it has been noted that the contractual terms regarding operations, maintenance, and odour management are allegedly not being fulfilled. Citizens have consistently voiced their concerns over these deficiencies.

During the assembly session, a member of the opposition party brought to the Minister’s attention the significant health problems faced by residents living near the Kanjur Marg dumping ground. It was alleged that solid and liquid waste is being dumped without adequate treatment, leading to considerable air pollution that adversely affects the health of local communities. Another member of the assembly also highlighted repeated reminders to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) that have failed to provide relief from the pervasive bad smell and air pollution, urging the early relocation of the dumping ground.

The Minister clarified that no individuals or entities would be spared or unduly supported in this matter, and emphatically stated that no further contract would be awarded to the current contractor. The Minister later informed the House that a third-party audit would also be conducted by independent experts, taking serious note of all complaints regarding the Kanjur Dumping Ground. A meeting is also set to be held under the chairmanship of the Deputy Chief Minister and Urban Development Minister, with Class-1 officers of concerned departments appointed as committee members.

This commitment to a thorough investigation and a third-party audit underscores the government’s resolve to address long-standing environmental concerns. Ensuring proper waste management is crucial for public health and sustainable urban living. This move aims to prevent future environmental degradation, fostering a cleaner and more equitable urban environment for all Mumbai residents.
