The Maharashtra government is set to launch an eco-friendly electric water taxi service connecting the Gateway of India in South Mumbai to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.
This initiative aims to slash the current travel time of 60–75 minutes to just 40 minutes, offering a sustainable and efficient alternative to road transport.
The proposed electric water taxis are designed to provide a quieter, cleaner, and more sustainable mode of transport. By utilizing electric-powered vessels, the service promises a substantial reduction in carbon emissions, aligning with the state’s commitment to promoting green mobility solutions. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to alleviate the mounting traffic woes in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and enhance connectivity to the new airport.
A recent meeting chaired by State Ports and Transport Minister Nitesh Rane marked a significant step forward in the planning of the water taxi service. Senior officials from the Maharashtra Maritime Board, Navi Mumbai Airport Authority, and other stakeholders convened to discuss the project’s implementation. Minister Rane emphasized the importance of integrating the water taxi service with existing and upcoming transport systems, including metro corridors and surface transit, to ensure seamless connectivity for commuters.
The Maharashtra Maritime Board has been tasked with overseeing the development of necessary infrastructure, including terminals and jetties, to support the electric water taxi operations. Construction will proceed in phases, starting with terminals at the Gateway of India and Navi Mumbai, based on demand and logistical feasibility.
A crucial milestone for the project was achieved when the Supreme Court of India dismissed a petition challenging the construction of a passenger terminal and jetty near the Gateway of India. With this legal clearance, the Maharashtra Maritime Board can proceed with the development of the terminal facilities without obstruction. The project has also received necessary environmental clearances, ensuring that it aligns with sustainable development practices.
The introduction of electric water taxis is expected to have far-reaching economic and social implications. By providing a faster and more reliable mode of transport, the service will facilitate improved access to the Navi Mumbai International Airport, benefiting both business and leisure travelers. Additionally, the project is anticipated to create employment opportunities in the maritime sector and stimulate economic growth in the region.
