Mumbai’s suburban railway, the city’s daily lifeline, is preparing for a historic transformation with the introduction of fully air-conditioned Vande Metro local trains. The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has floated a global tender worth ₹21,000 crore for the procurement and maintenance of 2,856 coaches, signalling a generational upgrade in commuter transport.
The project envisions 12, 15, and 18-coach rakes designed to reduce severe overcrowding while offering enhanced comfort, safety, and efficiency. Officials explained that the contract includes not only the supply of rolling stock but also 35 years of comprehensive maintenance, alongside the construction of two new depots for Central and Western Railways under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) Phases III and IIIA. Bid submissions will begin on 8 December 2025, with evaluation scheduled for 22 December. The new Vande Metro trains will bring in a host of modern features suited for Mumbai’s dense, high-frequency suburban corridors. Each rake will be fully air-conditioned and equipped with automatic door-closing systems, cushioned seating, dedicated vendor compartments with independent air ducts, mobile charging points, and optimised passenger flow design. Safety systems will comply with global standards, supported by advanced braking technology to ensure faster and smoother transit.
Officials highlighted that the first prototype rake is expected within two years of contract award, a timeline seen as critical in responding to surging commuter demand. The Vande Metro fleet will also introduce higher acceleration and deceleration capacities, cutting travel time between stations and improving service reliability. Urban mobility experts believe that this initiative goes beyond infrastructure upgrade—it represents a shift towards sustainable and equitable city transport. Air-conditioned suburban trains with energy-efficient systems, regenerative braking, and durable designs are expected to cut emissions, reduce heat stress for passengers, and align with the larger climate-conscious goals of Mumbai’s development plans.
The introduction of AC locals also responds to commuter expectations. For decades, overcrowding and poor travel conditions have been pressing concerns for the millions dependent on suburban rail. With the new fleet, passengers are promised consistent cooling, enhanced safety features, and a smoother travel experience, regardless of socio-economic background, ensuring public transport remains inclusive and equitable. The project has been structured under a Make in India framework, ensuring that a majority of components are manufactured domestically while fostering local technology integration. Officials affirmed that the procurement will strengthen India’s industrial base while simultaneously enhancing global competitiveness in modern train production.
As Mumbai continues to push forward with multiple urban transport projects—including metro corridors and suburban upgrades—the Vande Metro initiative is expected to redefine daily commuting. While challenges of execution and timelines remain, the tender underscores the city’s determination to build a cleaner, safer, and more reliable mobility ecosystem for the future.
