Mumbai is on the verge of a public transport revolution. By 2025, commuters in the city will experience significant upgrades, with four new Metro lines and the introduction of the Mumbai One app, promising to streamline the travel experience. This ambitious project will create a seamless, eco-friendly transport ecosystem that supports Mumbai’s journey towards becoming a smarter, greener, and more equitable city.
The vision is set to unlock significant benefits for daily commuters, reducing congestion and promoting sustainable transport options. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is already seeing rapid strides in Metro infrastructure, with a 12-line network under development, expected to span a total of 337.1 km. This network is a key component of the city’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and offer a sustainable alternative to private car travel. Currently, four Metro lines covering 58.9 km are operational, and another eight lines are under construction, which will further expand connectivity across Mumbai. One of the most anticipated developments is the opening of Metro Line 9, which is set to connect Dahisar and Mira Bhayander.

This 10.5 km elevated extension will offer better accessibility to the north-western suburbs of Mumbai, with the first phase expected to open by December 2025. The completion of Metro Line 2B, spanning 23.64 km from DN Nagar to Mandale, will also significantly reduce travel time across key areas, including BKC, Kurla, and Chembur. The new Metro lines will not only cater to a growing population but also provide a sustainable and eco-conscious commuting option, further aligning with the city’s environmental goals.
A major highlight of Mumbai’s transport overhaul is the Mumbai One app, which is set to launch in tandem with the new Metro lines. The app is designed to offer a frictionless and connected travel experience, with features such as live updates, QR code-based ticketing, and real-time tracking, making it a true game-changer for public transport in Mumbai. The Mumbai One app is expected to simplify daily commuting by offering map-based bookings, live updates, and seamless integration between various modes of transport. As part of the Digital India initiative, the app is expected to play a pivotal role in reducing dependency on paper tickets and manual processes, making Mumbai’s transport system more accessible and efficient for all citizens.

Moreover, to support the growth of the Metro network, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has completed the construction of the new Mandale Metro depot, which houses India’s largest Metro training centre. Equipped with advanced simulators, the centre will train a new generation of Metro operators and upskill existing staff, ensuring that the workforce is well-prepared for the growing needs of the city’s transport system.
