Orange alert has been issued for Mumbai this weekend, with the forecast predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has alerted residents that the consistent moderate to heavy rains, expected over the next 24 to 36 hours, could lead to significant waterlogging in the city and surrounding areas.
The western suburbs, including Dadar, Worli, and Bandra, are expected to bear the brunt of the rainfall. In addition, the interior regions of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) will also experience heavy downpours. This weather pattern is attributed to the alignment of westerly winds carrying proper humidity to the Konkan coast, setting the stage for continuous heavy rains in Mumbai, which are anticipated to persist into the following week. On Thursday, the IMD officially issued an orange alert for Mumbai, signalling heavy to very heavy rainfall for Friday and Saturday.
A scientist from the IMD, Mumbai, explained to the media that a monsoon trough coupled with a developing cyclonic circulation over Mumbai has intensified the westerly winds. This combination is likely to bring substantial rainfall to the Konkan belt of Maharashtra during this period. The orange alert extends beyond Mumbai, covering the districts of Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. These areas are also expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, as per the IMD’s advisory. Recent rainfall data underscores the severity of the current monsoon season. Between July 7 and July 9, Mumbai recorded a total of 422 mm of rainfall, with a staggering 268 mm falling within just 24 hours from July 7 to July 8.
The impending heavy rains and the issuance of the orange alert underscore the importance of preparedness for residents and local authorities. The potential for waterlogging and other rain-related disruptions necessitates vigilant monitoring and prompt response to any emerging challenges. As Mumbai navigates this intense weather period, the focus remains on ensuring safety and mitigating the impacts of the heavy monsoon rains.
