The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has unveiled plans for a 14-lane expressway connecting Mumbai and Bengaluru.
This ambitious project, part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana, aims to slash the current 18-hour journey between the two cities to just six hours. The proposed expressway, spanning approximately 700 kilometers, is designed as an access-controlled, greenfield route dedicated to fast-moving vehicles. It will feature 22 interchanges and 55 flyovers, facilitating seamless travel. Additionally, two emergency airstrips are planned to enhance safety and operational efficiency.
Commencing at Kanjale on the Pune Ring Road, the expressway will traverse through Maharashtra’s Pune, Satara, and Sangli districts before entering Karnataka. In Karnataka, it will pass through Belagavi, Bagalkot, Gadag, Koppal, Vijayanagar, Davanagere, Chitradurga, Tumakuru, and Bengaluru Rural, culminating in Bengaluru city. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will oversee the construction and maintenance of this extensive project. This infrastructure development is expected to significantly boost regional connectivity, particularly between major IT hubs like Pune and Bengaluru. By reducing travel time, the expressway will facilitate faster movement of goods and people, thereby stimulating economic growth and development in the regions it connects.
Environmental sustainability is a key consideration in this project. The expressway is part of the Green Express Highway initiative, emphasizing eco-friendly construction practices. Efforts will be made to minimize environmental impact through the use of recycled materials and the incorporation of green technologies. Charging stations for electric vehicles are also planned along the route, promoting the adoption of cleaner transportation options. The expressway’s design includes a speed limit of 120 kmph, ensuring swift yet safe travel. The reduction in travel time is anticipated to alleviate congestion on existing routes, such as the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, by providing an alternative high-capacity corridor.
While the project promises numerous benefits, timely execution and quality assurance remain critical. Past infrastructure projects have faced challenges related to delays and substandard work. To mitigate such issues, stringent monitoring and accountability measures will be essential throughout the construction phase.
