Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is preparing to appoint an independent engineering firm for its proposed pod taxi network connecting Kurla, Bandra, and the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). The move reflects a focused effort to ensure rigorous quality checks and seamless project execution of this ₹1,100 crore initiative aimed at last-mile connectivity.
The MMRDA has issued a public tender inviting specialised engineering consultancies to supervise the technical aspects of the project. The selected firm is expected to deploy a team of 18 engineers proficient in cutting-edge mobility technologies. Their role will include evaluating project designs, ensuring regulatory compliance, and making course corrections where necessary. Officials indicated that, unlike in-house monitoring typically undertaken by general consultants, this project demands expert oversight due to its unique automation and battery-powered infrastructure. The pod taxi system—India’s first urban-scale deployment—is designed to reduce travel time between Kurla and Bandra by offering high-frequency, on-demand transport. With 38 stations planned across the corridor, pods will arrive every 15 to 30 seconds. The proposed fare for a complete trip is estimated at ₹105. The corridor aims to decongest road traffic, cut emissions, and encourage a shift to shared electric mobility.
The project is being implemented by Sai Green Mobility under a special-purpose vehicle named BKC Connect Private Limited. Construction is likely to commence once the engineering partner is on board. The MMRDA has positioned this venture within its broader ₹1.2 lakh crore regional development strategy, which includes sustainable infrastructure and transit innovations across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. By investing in independent supervision, authorities are attempting to mitigate delays, boost transparency, and reinforce public trust in a transformative project that aligns with India’s net-zero urban goals. The hiring of external engineers is expected to ensure that this futuristic mobility plan remains both technically sound and environmentally responsible.
