Mumbai Tesla Opens First India Showroom In BKC Launches Model Y
In Mumbai, Tesla, the electric vehicle giant, has officially inaugurated its first showroom in India today, located in the prominent Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) business district. This highly anticipated entry into the Indian market was marked by the launch of the Model Y electric car, signaling a new chapter for premium electric mobility in the country. State Chief Minister welcomed the company’s arrival, expressing confidence in Mumbai and Maharashtra as key hubs for innovation and sustainability in the automotive sector.
The newly opened showroom, designated as an “experience center,” is strategically positioned in Mumbai’s upscale BKC, specifically at Maker Maxity Mall. To support its operational footprint, Tesla India previously secured significant warehousing space in Lodha Logistics Park. The company had already obtained a ‘trade certificate’ from the Regional Transport Office, granting it the necessary permissions to display vehicles, conduct test drives, and commence sales activities, thereby formalizing its market entry after extensive anticipation and regulatory processes.
Currently, two variants of the Model Y electric car, imported as Completely Built-Up (CBU) units from Tesla’s Shanghai factory, are on display at the BKC showroom. The Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variant is priced at Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Long Range RWD variant is available at Rs 67.89 lakh (ex-showroom). Reports suggest that Tesla plans to introduce additional models based on market demand and aims to open its second showroom or experience center in New Delhi, followed by expansion into other key Indian cities.
This landmark entry signals a new era for India’s electric vehicle market, offering premium EV options and spurring competition. While initial focus is on sales, the state’s invitation for local manufacturing indicates a strong long-term vision for sustainable mobility and technological advancement within the country.
