Mumbai’s suburban rail network faced significant disruption on Saturday night after the 16507 Jodhpur-KSR Bengaluru Express was stalled at Badlapur station for nearly two hours, delaying multiple local trains heading towards Karjat. The halt, prompted by repeated alarm chain-pulling incidents and passenger complaints, led to a tense situation between local commuters and long-distance passengers, highlighting the operational challenges faced by Mumbai’s densely utilised suburban network.
Railway authorities stated that the express train, travelling from Gujarat, experienced two main issues: theft incidents along the Surat-Vapi stretch and overcrowding due to non-confirmed passengers. “Passengers reportedly caught a thief on the Surat-Valsad/Vapi stretch, and there were multiple instances of alarm chain-pulling linked to congestion inside the coaches,” explained a Central Railway (CR) official. The situation escalated at Badlapur, where locals waiting for suburban trains experienced delays of up to 45 minutes. The Jodhpur-Bengaluru Express was first halted from 11:27 pm to 12:03 am due to chain-pulling in Coach B-3, and again briefly before arriving at Badlapur at 12:17 am. Passengers did not allow railway staff to reset the alarm chains, resulting in further delays. The train finally departed at 12:52 am but was again detained before Karjat station to manage stranded passengers, affecting both local and long-distance services, including trains towards Khopoli.
An RPF official noted that a joint team of the Government Railway Police and Railway Protection Force accompanied the passengers to Pune to address the complaints and ensure safe onward travel. “Given the seriousness of the complaints and passenger protests, a coordinated effort was made to resolve the issues while maintaining safety and order on the network,” the official said. Railway sources acknowledged the broader operational challenges this incident highlighted. Mumbai’s suburban network, operating at near-maximum capacity, often struggles to manage unscheduled stops and disruptions caused by both technical and passenger-related incidents. Experts note that timely communication, stricter monitoring of alarm chains, and enhanced security measures are essential to minimise such conflicts and maintain commuter reliability.
The incident underscores the need for greater integration of suburban and long-distance train operations in high-traffic corridors. Authorities are considering measures including faster grievance redressal, better crowd management, and deployment of additional personnel at critical stations to reduce commuter inconvenience in future.
