In response to the global rise in mpox cases and the subsequent declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has escalated its precautionary measures in Mumbai.
Recognising the gravity of the situation, the BMC has established a dedicated 14-bed ward at Seven Hills Hospital to manage and isolate suspected mpox cases. This proactive step is part of a broader strategy to mitigate the potential spread of the virus within the city. As part of these measures, thermal screening and comprehensive surveillance have been implemented at Mumbai’s airports, focusing on passengers arriving from countries where mpox cases have been reported. The BMC, in coordination with the Airport Health Office, has initiated rigorous checks to ensure that any travellers displaying symptoms or having a history of contact with mpox-infected individuals are swiftly identified and isolated.
This initiative comes amid rising concerns following confirmed cases in regions such as Pakistan and Sweden. During a recent meeting between BMC officials and representatives from the Airport Health Office, detailed plans were laid out to enhance the city’s preparedness. These include protocols for the immediate isolation of suspected cases and their transfer to Seven Hills Hospital for further treatment and observation. The BMC emphasised the importance of vigilance, particularly given the highly infectious nature of mpox and its potential to cause significant public health challenges.
Mpox, which has an incubation period of 3 to 17 days, presents with symptoms such as a rash that typically appears on the hands, feet, chest, face, and genital areas. The rash, which can be both painful and itchy, evolves through several stages before healing. Given the possibility of asymptomatic transmission, the BMC’s surveillance efforts are crucial in preventing an outbreak in Mumbai. The BMC’s swift actions reflect the city’s commitment to public health and safety, aiming to prevent the spread of mpox through stringent airport screening and the establishment of specialised treatment facilities.
