The long-awaited reconstruction of Mumbai’s Sion Bridge is set to conclude by May 2026, according to civic authorities overseeing the major infrastructure project. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), in coordination with Indian Railways, confirmed that the key east-west connector will be completed within the next year, marking a crucial milestone in the city’s urban mobility roadmap.
The bridge, a lifeline for thousands of daily commuters between Dharavi, Lal Bahadur Shastri Road, and surrounding neighbourhoods, is undergoing phased redevelopment due to structural vulnerabilities identified after detailed audits. The southern section of the bridge was declared unfit, prompting phased demolition and reconstruction efforts. As per the latest update from senior BMC officials, railway authorities are on track to complete work on the southern foot overbridge (FOB) by August 31, 2025. Once that segment is finished, demolition of the southern span of the main bridge will commence. Work on dismantling the old structure below the bridge will begin simultaneously.
The installation of key iron girders, which form the foundation of the bridge’s new deck, will be carried out in two phases—the northern section by November 2025 and the southern section by January 2026. Following this, remaining works under the railway’s jurisdiction, such as deck construction and concrete works, will proceed without delay. Officials noted that approach roads connecting the bridge to major corridors like Dharavi and Lal Bahadur Shastri Road will be fully completed by March 2026, ensuring a seamless flow of traffic once the bridge is inaugurated in May. The reconstruction is being executed with an emphasis on structural safety, climate resilience, and minimised commuter disruption.
The project is part of a broader thrust by the BMC to modernise ageing infrastructure and enhance connectivity across key transport corridors. The Sion Bridge revamp joins a series of critical bridge upgrades, including the ongoing works at Carnac Bridge and Bellasis Flyover, to future-proof Mumbai’s road and rail interface. While the delays and traffic diversions have posed challenges for residents and motorists alike, officials maintain that the timelines are aligned with engineering safety and regulatory protocols. The successful completion of the Sion Bridge by May 2026 is expected to significantly reduce bottlenecks and contribute to the long-term sustainability of Mumbai’s urban transport system.
