Mumbai’s mass transit landscape is poised for a pivotal upgrade as Phase 2A of Metro Line 3 prepares to roll out, bridging the high-density corridor from Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to Worli.
In a significant push towards sustainable urban transport, the 33.5-kilometre-long underground Aqua Line, once fully operational, promises to reshape commuting dynamics for lakhs of residents and professionals navigating the city’s overburdened roads. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL), led by Managing Director Ashwini Bhide, has confirmed that the stretch between BKC and Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli is in its final stage of readiness. The route awaits the nod from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), with approvals likely within the next 48 hours. This phase, once certified, will integrate into Mumbai’s growing metro matrix, extending the operational metro network from 60 kilometres to a projected 374 kilometres across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

While the precise inauguration date remains under wraps, city officials and planners anticipate the launch around May 1—Maharashtra Day—or potentially during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mumbai on May 2. The timing is politically significant but also symbolic, aligning with long-standing state infrastructure goals. The expanded reach of Metro Line 3 is expected to serve a crucial swathe of Mumbai, linking business hubs, institutional clusters, and cultural precincts, while drastically reducing the need for vehicular travel. In tandem with the city’s climate goals, the underground nature of Metro 3 enhances its eco-efficiency by minimising land acquisition, tree cutting, and displacement—common concerns in large-scale urban infrastructure projects. The line will connect 30 key office nodes, 12 academic centres, 11 hospitals, 10 transit junctions, and 25 cultural and recreational sites. It will also provide seamless access to both domestic and international airport terminals, further strengthening its position as a critical transport artery.
Meanwhile, temporary revisions have been announced for the existing services on Metro Line 3 between Aarey and BKC. For April 25 and 26, trains will operate on altered schedules due to technical adjustments, with services commencing at 6:30 am and 7:30 am respectively, and continuing till 9:30 pm. The current operational stretch spans 12.44 km with 10 stations and has already halved the travel time from over an hour by road to 30 minutes by metro. Fare slabs continue to remain commuter-friendly, ranging from ₹10 to ₹50.The looming expansion of Metro Line 3 is emblematic of Mumbai’s broader aspirations to become a model for climate-resilient, equitable, and carbon-conscious urban mobility. The city, which hosts a daily ridership nearing one crore across its varied public transport systems, stands to benefit immensely from such integrated solutions that promise not just connectivity, but dignity, safety, and sustainability in everyday travel.
As Mumbai inches closer to another metro milestone, the pressure now lies in ensuring that speed and ambition do not compromise quality, safety, or inclusivity—principles that define the future of truly people-centric urban development.
