The city woke up to overcast skies on Monday with weather forecasts pointing to widespread rainfall across the day and a steady improvement in air quality. With showers expected to continue through the week, experts say the combination of rain and strong winds will not only cool the city but also help maintain healthier atmospheric conditions.
According to weather officials, Mumbai is expected to receive moderate showers with a near 96 per cent chance of rainfall through September 22. Daytime temperatures are likely to hover around 27.4°C, with highs of 28°C and lows of 26.8°C, creating relatively comfortable conditions despite the high humidity of 81 per cent. Winds are forecast to reach 23 km/h, while visibility remains steady at around 9.8 km. Encouragingly, air quality readings over the weekend indicated significant improvement. The Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 48, firmly in the “good” category. Key pollutants such as PM2.5 were recorded at 17 µg/m³ and PM10 at 48 µg/m³, levels considered safe for all age groups. Officials noted that rainfall has been a decisive factor in dispersing airborne particles, thereby reducing pollution and stabilising urban air quality.
Carbon monoxide concentrations were measured at 296 µg/m³, well within safe thresholds. Environmental experts highlight that consistent rainfall through the week will continue to wash away dust, pollen, and industrial emissions, offering relief from the pollution spikes witnessed earlier this month. This natural cleansing process has become especially significant for a city grappling with chronic air quality concerns during dry months. The forecast for the coming days suggests a wet week ahead. On Tuesday, the city is likely to experience moderate rain with temperatures ranging between 27.1°C and 24.9°C. Wednesday will bring steady rainfall with highs near 28.3°C, while Thursday is expected to see patchy showers. Friday will likely cool further, with temperatures dipping to 25.4°C in the evening. The weekend could see increased wind speeds, particularly on Saturday when gusts may reach 33 km/h, followed by moderate showers on Sunday with temperatures falling to 24.8°C.
Experts advise residents to plan outdoor activities in the mornings when showers are relatively lighter. However, late afternoons are expected to see heavier spells, which may affect road traffic and visibility. Authorities have urged commuters to exercise caution on slippery roads and to carry rain protection as high humidity levels are likely to persist. While the rain is a temporary disruption to daily life, urban planners view the improved air quality as a reminder of the critical need for cleaner, climate-resilient cities. Officials note that the monsoon season highlights how nature-based solutions such as rain and wind patterns can work in tandem with policy-driven pollution controls to build healthier urban environments.
With forecasts pointing to continued showers and clear skies later in the week, Mumbai appears set for a rare blend of monsoon rain and breathable air — an encouraging sign for a city where clean air is often a luxury.
