Mumbai Schools Open Despite Heavy Rains

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided that all schools and colleges within its jurisdiction will operate as usual today, Friday, 26 July 2024. This decision, communicated via X, comes as Mumbai experiences a temporary respite from the recent heavy rains that have been battering the region.

According to the BMC, the current weather conditions in Mumbai have stabilised sufficiently to allow educational institutions to remain open. The corporation has urged parents and guardians to rely solely on official notifications rather than unverified information circulating on social media. The announcement serves to ensure that educational routines are maintained and to prevent confusion among students and parents alike. The Raigad administration has opted for a more cautious approach in response to the severe weather conditions predicted for the region.

Given the forecasted intensity of the rains, Raigad has declared a shutdown of all schools and colleges for the day. This decision aligns with the red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for Raigad, indicating extremely heavy rainfall and associated risks. The IMD’s recent advisories underscore the severity of the weather across Maharashtra. For Mumbai, the IMD has issued an orange alert for today and a yellow alert for the following day, reflecting a moderate risk of adverse weather. Meanwhile, Raigad is under a red alert for 26 July, with an orange alert extending to 27 July. Additionally, Ratnagiri and Satara are also under a red alert for today, highlighting the broad impact of the ongoing weather system.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has been actively monitoring the situation and has reached out to the Raigad collector to ensure adequate support and resources for flood-affected areas. This proactive engagement underscores the administration’s commitment to managing the impact of the heavy rainfall. As of the last recorded data, Mumbai has received 44 mm of rainfall in the city, with the Eastern and Western suburbs registering 90 mm and 89 mm respectively. The ongoing heavy rains have necessitated such regional responses to safeguard public safety and continuity in education.
