Mumbai Samruddhi Expressway Sees Over 11 Lakh Vehicles In Month After Full Opening
Mumbai’s connectivity has seen a major boost as the prestigious Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Mahamarg recorded a significant surge in vehicular traffic, with over 11.23 lakh vehicles traveling on the mega-highway in the month following the opening of its final stretch on June 5. This remarkable figure represents a nearly 32 percent increase in monthly vehicular movement compared to the January to May average, according to data released by the state road development corporation. The surge in usage has also led to a sharp rise in toll revenue, underscoring the highway’s growing utility.
In the period between June 6 and July 6, the expressway generated an impressive Rs 90 crore in toll collections, a substantial increase from previous months. Prior to the completion of the final 76-kilometre stretch from Igatpuri to Amane, the expressway averaged 8.5 lakh vehicles monthly. With the entire 701-kilometre route from Nagpur to Mumbai now fully operational, it has become the preferred choice for both passenger and commercial traffic, drastically cutting travel time between the two major cities to approximately eight hours. Specific toll plazas also saw high traffic, with Amane in Thane district recording 1.97 lakh vehicles and Rs 19.2 crore in revenue, while Khutghar near Shahapur registered 27,612 vehicles, collecting Rs 98 lakh.
Since its initial section was inaugurated on December 11, 2022, the Samruddhi Mahamarg has handled over 2.24 crore vehicles. With the full route now open, the average daily traffic has climbed to approximately 37,000 vehicles. Constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 61,000 crore, this access-controlled expressway is a cornerstone of Maharashtra’s infrastructure, designed to significantly improve connectivity between eastern and western parts of the state. Authorities anticipate traffic volume will continue to grow steadily in the coming months, with ongoing efforts to enhance amenities and service infrastructure along the route to meet rising demand and ensure smooth operations.
This remarkable increase in traffic underscores the Samruddhi Mahamarg’s transformative impact on Maharashtra’s connectivity and economy. As a vital artery, it facilitates faster movement of people and goods, reinforcing regional integration and economic development, truly serving as a corridor of prosperity for the state.
