Mumbai Residents Expose Footpath Digging Racket for Copper Theft

In a startling revelation, residents along the Dadar-Matunga stretch of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road in Mumbai have uncovered a criminal scheme involving the theft of copper wire from utility cables buried beneath footpaths. The incident, initially thought to be routine road repairs by authorities, turned out to be a meticulously planned operation by a group of thieves. Following a series of complaints about the haphazard digging of footpaths, local residents alerted the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Upon investigation, BMC officials discovered that copper wires from utility cables were being systematically stolen from underneath the footpath. This discovery prompted further action from both residents and authorities.

The theft of copper wires, valued at ₹6-7 lakhs, prompted the Matunga police to launch a thorough investigation. With assistance from state-run telecom company MTNL, which reported disruptions in telephone lines due to the theft, the police were able to apprehend five suspects involved in the crime.

According to police officials, the thieves were digging small portions of the footpath every night to avoid detection. However, their operation was eventually uncovered, leading to the arrests. Despite this, authorities suspect the involvement of additional accomplices and are continuing their efforts to identify and apprehend them. The incident has raised significant concerns about the security and integrity of urban infrastructure in Mumbai. Alongside the BMC, various agencies responsible for underground utility installations, including MMRDA, Mahanagar Gas, and Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation, have been alerted to the issue. Measures are being taken to enhance security protocols and prevent similar incidents in the future.

The BMC has lodged an FIR against the culprits and is working closely with law enforcement agencies to address the situation. Additionally, efforts are underway to streamline communication between authorities to ensure prompt action against unauthorized activities that pose a threat to public safety and infrastructure integrity.
