Mumbai Region Faces Heavy Rains Raigad On Red Alert Schools Close

Mumbai is bracing for continued heavy rainfall, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for the nearby Raigad district, prompting significant precautionary measures. All schools in six Raigad talukas – Tala, Roha, Pali, Mahad, Poladpur, and Mangaon – have been declared closed for Tuesday by the district administration. Concurrently, IMD Mumbai has forecast moderate spells of rain for isolated locations in Mumbai and Thane districts over the next few hours, with potential for thunder, lightning, and gusty winds, urging residents to take necessary precautions.

The severe weather in Raigad has led to rivers, including the Kundalika, crossing warning levels due to continuous overnight downpour and strong winds. Affected areas are also experiencing high tides and stormy conditions. The decision to close educational institutions in these talukas was made to ensure student safety, following reviews of the local situation. While students are off, teaching staff are required to report to their institutions to assist local administration with any disaster management duties, if needed, emphasizing a coordinated response to the adverse conditions.

Meanwhile, Mumbai continues to receive substantial rainfall, with Colaba recording 12.2 mm and Santacruz 38.2 mm. This precipitation has brought considerable relief to the city’s water supply. Data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) indicates that the combined water stock in the seven reservoirs supplying drinking water to Mumbai now stands at 78.30 percent of their total capacity, amounting to 11,33,347 million litres. Notably, Modak Sagar has reached 100 percent capacity, while other key lakes like Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Upper Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vihar, and Tulsi also show healthy water levels, securing the city’s drinking water needs.

The monsoon continues to test urban resilience, highlighting the critical role of timely alerts and robust water management. While heavy rains necessitate precautions in Raigad, Mumbai’s rising lake levels offer much-needed relief for its water security, underscoring the dynamic impact of seasonal weather across the region.
