Mumbai records 106 mm rainfall in 24 hours as monsoon arrives early

Mumbai has experienced its earliest monsoon onset in 75 years, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) officially declaring the arrival of the southwest monsoon on May 26, 2025.

This early onset has been accompanied by unprecedented rainfall, with the city recording its wettest May in a century. The cumulative rainfall for the month has reached 295 mm, surpassing previous records and highlighting the intensifying impact of climate change on urban infrastructure. The heavy downpours have led to significant disruptions across the city. Suburban train services have faced delays due to waterlogging and fallen trees on tracks, while several low-lying areas, including parts of South Mumbai, have experienced flooding. The newly inaugurated Acharya Atre Chowk metro station at Worli Naka was temporarily shut after rainwater entered the premises, prompting the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation to halt operations there.

In response to the ongoing weather conditions, the IMD has issued a red alert for the city, forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds at isolated places. Residents have been advised to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel during this period. The early arrival of the monsoon and the subsequent heavy rainfall have raised concerns about the city’s preparedness to handle such extreme weather events. Urban planners and environmental experts emphasize the need for enhanced infrastructure resilience, including improved drainage systems, flood management strategies, and the adoption of sustainable urban planning practices to mitigate the impact of future climatic anomalies.

This event serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for cities like Mumbai to invest in climate-resilient infrastructure and adopt sustainable practices to safeguard against the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. As the city braces for further rainfall, it is imperative that authorities and residents collaborate to ensure the safety and well-being of all.
