Mumbai Rains Trigger Waterlogging Andheri Subway Closed Traffic Disrupted Across Key City Areas

Mumbai woke up to a rain-soaked Monday as persistent downpours since Sunday night brought significant disruptions across the city. Heavy showers led to widespread waterlogging in central and south Mumbai, causing traffic snarls, delays in local train services, and road closures that challenged daily commuters.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar, while Raigad remains under an orange alert signalling very heavy rainfall. Meteorological officials warned of continuing showers, urging residents to remain cautious, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas. By early morning, major thoroughfares and key junctions reported water accumulation. Areas such as Kings Circle, Sion, Byculla, Mahalaxmi, and the upscale Peddar Road witnessed knee-deep water, significantly hampering movement. Kurla recorded rainwater on railway tracks, impacting the smooth functioning of local train services. Residents and commuters were forced to wade through the flooded streets as rain persisted without relief.

Local train services, the city’s lifeline, experienced delays of 10–15 minutes on Central and Harbour lines. Several early morning services on the Harbour line were cancelled, affecting office-goers and daily commuters. The Western line reported minor delays of up to five minutes, with officials advising passengers to plan journeys accordingly. Despite disruptions, no official statements were released immediately, leaving commuters reliant on real-time social media updates and local alerts. The Andheri Subway emerged as a major bottleneck, necessitating closure due to one to one-and-a-half feet of water accumulation. Mumbai Traffic Police redirected vehicles via the Gokhale Bridge, while traffic congestion was also reported on the Eastern Express Highway near Sion and Kings Circle.

The monsoon impact extended beyond Mumbai, with the IMD issuing warnings across Maharashtra. Ratnagiri, along with Pune and Satara ghats, were placed under orange alert for very heavy rainfall, while Marathwada, North Maharashtra, and Vidarbha regions remained on yellow alert for continuous showers over the next four days. City officials emphasised the importance of climate-resilient infrastructure and sustainable urban planning to manage increasing monsoon intensity. Experts highlighted that prompt water drainage, efficient public transport, and eco-friendly solutions are critical to reducing commuter hardship and ensuring equitable access to safe urban mobility.

As Mumbai contends with its monsoon challenges, residents are advised to exercise caution, anticipate delays, and prioritise safety while navigating waterlogged areas. The city’s response to such weather disruptions will play a vital role in shaping future urban planning and sustainable flood management initiatives.
