Mumbai-Pune Missing Link Project to Transform Travel with ₹6,600 Crore Investment by August 2025
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, a critical lifeline connecting two of Maharashtra’s major cities, is set to undergo a transformative upgrade with the completion of the ₹6,600 crore “missing link” project. As of now, 92% of the work is completed, with the new deadline for the project set for August 2025. The missing link is poised to reduce the distance between the two cities by 5.7 kilometres, potentially cutting travel time by up to 30 minutes. Once finished, the project promises to alleviate traffic congestion and provide smoother, faster commutes for the millions who rely on this route every day.
The construction of the 13-kilometre missing link has faced several delays, largely due to the complex nature of the terrain and ambitious engineering feats involved. From an initial deadline of March 2024, the timeline has been pushed back multiple times, first to January 2025 and later to March 2025. Despite these challenges, a senior official from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) noted that the project is making steady progress. Key components, such as tunnels and the first viaduct, are already completed, but the second viaduct, which will cross a steep valley, remains a significant challenge. This cable-stayed bridge, which towers 100 metres above the Khandala Valley, is one of the project’s most complex features, underscoring the intricate nature of the construction.
Beyond the technical hurdles, the project’s design also addresses crucial concerns related to safety and infrastructure resilience. One of the primary goals of this project is to turn the Mumbai-Pune Expressway into a “zero-fatality corridor,” aiming to reduce accidents, particularly those associated with the dangerous ghat sections. With fewer hills to navigate, vehicles will be able to travel at speeds of up to 120 km per hour, contributing to an overall reduction in travel time and improving efficiency. Furthermore, the new alignment promises to eliminate one of the most persistent issues along this route—falling debris and boulders during the monsoon season, which frequently disrupt traffic flow. The new infrastructure will be equipped with advanced engineering solutions to prevent these seasonal disruptions and improve road safety.
