To ensure uninterrupted electricity supply and enhancing grid resilience, Mumbai is set to bolster its power infrastructure with a high-capacity Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capable of 100 MW across multiple urban sites. The initiative, led by one of the city’s leading distribution companies supplying over eight lakh consumers, is expected to transform the city’s energy landscape over the next two years.

This development strengthens Mumbai’s sophisticated islanding mechanism, which isolates its power supply from the national grid during regional failures, thereby safeguarding essential services and residents from large-scale outages. The upcoming BESS will feature advanced black start capabilities—technology that enables rapid restoration of power without relying on an external power source—ensuring that critical infrastructure such as hospitals, metro railways, the airport, and data centres can be swiftly brought back online in the event of a grid collapse. According to company officials, this intelligent system will enhance Mumbai’s capability to respond to emergencies with greater precision, minimising the human and economic cost of power failures. With its ability to modulate reactive power, the BESS will further optimise peak-time performance and strengthen the city’s power distribution architecture.
Beyond its emergency function, the BESS will serve as a critical pillar for managing Mumbai’s peak load requirements. By storing energy during off-peak, low-tariff hours and releasing it during high-demand periods, the system is expected to significantly reduce power procurement costs and eventually contribute to more affordable tariffs for end consumers. Its high ramp-rate capability—referring to how quickly it can supply or absorb power—will allow smoother management of sudden demand spikes, easing the strain on conventional power systems.
The broader implications of this project are rooted in sustainability. The BESS will support Mumbai’s transition to greener energy by integrating solar generation more efficiently.
