Mumbai Port Seeks Approval to Reclaim Jawahar Dweep for Expansion

Mumbai: The Mumbai Port Authority has formally submitted a proposal to the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways seeking approval to reclaim land at Jawahar Dweep, marking a strategic push to expand port capacity and boost regional maritime infrastructure. The proposed project aims to strengthen cargo handling, enhance port-linked industrial activity, and modernise the surrounding logistics ecosystem in alignment with India’s maritime growth ambitions.

Officials from the port authority explained that the reclamation plan focuses on creating additional operational space for container handling, storage facilities, and ancillary port services. “The objective is to optimise cargo movement, reduce congestion, and integrate sustainable infrastructure practices in the reclaimed area,” an official noted. The project also includes plans for improved road connectivity, parking zones, and environmentally conscious landscaping to maintain ecological balance.

Experts point out that reclamation at Jawahar Dweep could play a pivotal role in India’s Blue Economy strategy, supporting the country’s push to become a global maritime hub. Analysts highlight that efficient land use at Mumbai Port would not only ease existing congestion but also facilitate trade across the Western Indian coastline, strengthening Gujarat–Maharashtra maritime corridors.

The proposal has sparked discussions among environmental specialists and urban planners. Authorities have assured that the reclamation would strictly follow environmental clearance procedures under the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms. “Sustainability is central to the design,” said a port official. “We aim for low-carbon construction, preservation of marine biodiversity, and careful monitoring of water and soil quality during the project’s execution.”Once approved, the reclaimed land is expected to support multimodal cargo operations, linking rail, road, and sea transport seamlessly. The development is projected to boost employment opportunities in logistics, shipping, and allied sectors, further contributing to Mumbai’s economic growth. Industry experts also emphasise that integrating green building principles and renewable energy sources into the design could make the facility a benchmark for eco-friendly port operations.

The reclamation is part of a broader strategy by the Mumbai Port Authority to modernise port infrastructure and maintain competitiveness against emerging regional ports. Officials are confident that Jawahar Dweep’s enhanced capacity will facilitate faster turnaround times for vessels and accommodate larger cargo volumes, ensuring efficiency gains for importers and exporters.By focusing on sustainable growth, the project reflects India’s commitment to building equitable, gender-neutral, and environmentally conscious urban-industrial spaces. As the government reviews the proposal, stakeholders are calling for continuous consultation with maritime experts, urban planners, and local communities to ensure inclusive development.
