Mumbai is poised for a significant enhancement in its urban transportation network as plans advance to seamlessly connect two key Metro lines with India’s inaugural bullet train project at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) station. This strategic multi-modal integration aims to provide commuters with unparalleled travel efficiency, fostering a more sustainable and equitable urban environment. The initiative underscores a commitment to developing integrated transit solutions that reduce carbon footprint and improve city liveability.
In a pivotal development for Mumbai’s burgeoning infrastructure, the city’s metro network is set to achieve unprecedented connectivity with the high-speed rail (HSR) system at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) station. This ambitious multi-modal integration (MMI) initiative, currently under active consideration by key urban development authorities, promises to redefine inter-city and intra-city travel in the financial capital. The strategic plan involves linking the HSR station with Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line), which runs from Cuffe Parade to Aarey Colony, and Metro Line 2B, connecting DN Nagar to Mandale. This comprehensive integration is designed to create a seamless transit experience, significantly reducing commuting times and enhancing accessibility across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The proposed connectivity measures are meticulously planned to ensure optimal passenger flow and operational efficiency. For Metro Line 3, which is already partially operational from Aarey to BKC, an underground tunnel, approximately 1.1 kilometres in length, is envisioned. This tunnel will feature a travelator, providing a convenient and sheltered link between the bullet train’s BKC station and Metro Line 3’s Kotak-BKC station. Concurrently, Metro Line 2B, currently under construction, will be connected via a foot over bridge (FOB) to the IL&FS station. These integrated pathways are crucial for facilitating swift and comfortable transfers, thereby promoting greater reliance on public transport and contributing to a reduction in private vehicular traffic and associated emissions.
A high-level meeting convened on July 1, involving the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), and Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), underscored the collaborative spirit driving this project. During the deliberations, NHSRCL confirmed its plans to incorporate the tunnel’s construction during the ongoing development of the Mumbai HSR, which forms a critical segment of the Ahmedabad-Mumbai High Speed Rail corridor. While the precise location for the tunnel has been identified, the intricate details concerning its construction, cost allocation, and operational responsibilities are still being finalised. Initial estimates suggest the tunnel’s cost could range between ₹100 crore and ₹150 crore, a significant investment towards enhancing urban mobility.
Beyond direct connectivity, the HSR station at BKC is also being designed with four additional connecting outlets to seamlessly integrate with surrounding areas and potential future commercial developments. This forward-thinking approach aligns with the broader vision of creating a vibrant urban hub around the transit node, fostering economic growth while ensuring sustainable urban planning. The proposed tunnel, with its design resembling subways found at prominent railway stations like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Churchgate, could also incorporate retail spaces, further enhancing the commuter experience and generating ancillary revenue.
