Mumbai on Yellow Alert as Monsoon Rain Triggers Dam Water Release

Mumbai continues to experience relentless monsoon showers, with forecasts indicating intensification in the days ahead. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for July 8 and July 10, warning residents of potentially heavy rainfall. In response to the continuous rain and rising water levels in the catchment areas, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation confirmed the opening of three gates of the Middle Vaitarna Dam in Palghar district on Monday afternoon. According to the civic body’s release, gates 1, 3, and 5 have been raised by 30 centimetres each to allow the release of water at a rate of 3,000 cusecs.

While Mumbai has not faced extremely heavy rain over recent weeks, the city has already received 57 percent of its annual average rainfall. The Santacruz area alone has recorded 44 percent of its expected yearly total. The IMD noted that moderate rain continued across parts of the city, with the possibility of heavier spells in the next few days. On July 8, cloudy skies and moderate rain are expected with an active yellow alert in place. July 9 is likely to bring heavier rain, although no formal alert has been issued for that day. July 10 is expected to see moderate rainfall again, accompanied by another yellow alert. Similar conditions are forecast to continue through July 13, though no new warnings have been declared beyond July 10.

This surge in rainfall is consistent with Mumbai’s typical July weather pattern, which usually sees the highest volume of monsoon rain during the year. While the showers are essential for replenishing the city’s reservoirs, they also lead to recurring issues like waterlogging, slowed traffic, and localised flooding. The city authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, especially during periods of intense rain, and to avoid flood-prone areas. Officials have also recommended that the public stay informed through updates from reliable sources such as the IMD and AIR News Mumbai.
