Mumbai on Alert IMD Warns of Intense Rainfall Today

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised concerns across Mumbai and its surrounding districts with an orange alert, signalling expectations of heavy to very heavy rainfall. This warning, extended for Friday and Saturday, underscores the imminent threat posed by a monsoon trough coupled with cyclonic circulation intensifying over the region.

According a scientist at IMD Mumbai, the convergence of these meteorological phenomena has bolstered westerly winds, increasing the likelihood of intense rainfall across Maharashtra’s Konkan belt. This includes Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts, all of which have been placed under the orange alert status. Notably, recent weather data reveals a significant deluge in Mumbai from July 7 to July 9, accumulating a total of 422 mm of rainfall. A substantial portion of this precipitation, 268 mm, was recorded within a single 24-hour period from July 7 to July 8, exacerbating concerns over flooding and infrastructural strain.

The IMD’s issuance of the orange alert serves as a critical advisory for local authorities and residents to brace for adverse weather conditions, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to mitigate potential risks. Such alerts are instrumental in guiding disaster preparedness efforts, urging citizens to implement contingency plans and ensure public safety. Concurrently, today’s high tide is expected at 4:39 pm with a peak height of 3.69 meters. In light of these conditions, residents of Mumbai are advised to refrain from unnecessary outdoor activities and travel unless absolutely essential. The authorities have urged the public to exercise caution and preparedness, emphasizing the importance of staying informed and adhering to safety guidelines during this period of heightened weather alert. For any assistance or emergency, individuals can contact the designated helpline at 1916.
