A new epoch in India’s aviation landscape is set to begin with the groundbreaking announcement that IndiGo will be the inaugural airline to commence commercial flight operations from the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA).
This landmark partnership between IndiGo and Adani Airport Holdings (AAHL) is poised to fundamentally reshape air travel accessibility for millions, significantly de-congesting the existing Mumbai airport, and serving as a powerful catalyst for India’s ambition to become the world’s third-largest aviation economy by 2030. The strategic alignment underscores a commitment to enhancing connectivity and fostering sustainable urban development for Mumbai, a global financial hub. From its very first day of commercial operations, IndiGo is set to launch an impressive 18 daily departures, equating to 36 Air Traffic Movements (ATMs), connecting NMIA to over 15 cities across India. This initial commitment positions IndiGo as the pioneering airline to fully embrace the new airport from its inception. The airline’s operational scale is projected to escalate rapidly, with plans to increase to 79 daily departures (158 ATMs), including 14 international departures, by November 2025. Further expansion will see this figure exceed 100 daily departures (200 ATMs) by March 2026, culminating in a formidable 140 daily departures (280 ATMs), including 30 international routes, by November 2026. This aggressive ramp-up highlights IndiGo’s confidence in NMIA’s potential and its strategic vision for enhancing network reach.
Pieter Elbers, Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo, expressed his enthusiasm for this collaboration, stating, “IndiGo will be the inaugural airline to operate from NMIA and we couldn’t be more pleased to announce this. Our alliance signals towards achievement of complete operational readiness on both sides to take next steps. This expansion underscores our dedication to catering to the evolving needs of our aspirational travellers and further contributing to the growth of India’s booming aviation sector.” He further emphasised that the new flights from NMIA will elevate the travel experience, offering affordable, on-time, and hassle-free services across IndiGo’s unparalleled network. This focus on customer experience and affordability is crucial for ensuring equitable access to air travel for a broader demographic. Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airport Holdings, echoed this sentiment, remarking, “We are delighted to announce IndiGo as the first airline partner to commence operations from NMIA. This partnership marks a major step towards confirming NMIA’s position as a transfer hub for domestic and international travellers.” He added that this collaboration is set to transform the travel experience for millions, providing enhanced convenience and a wider array of travel options. This dual-airport system for Mumbai is not merely about increasing capacity; it is about creating a more resilient, efficient, and passenger-friendly aviation ecosystem that can support the region’s burgeoning economic growth and improve overall urban liveability.
NMIA is envisioned to become India’s premier international aviation hub, boasting state-of-the-art facilities, a best-in-class passenger experience, and seamless multi-modal connectivity. Strategically located with advanced infrastructure, the airport is poised to play a pivotal role in augmenting India’s global air travel network. In its initial phase, NMIA is designed to handle 20 million passengers and 0.5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo annually. Its ultimate capacity is projected to expand significantly, capable of serving 90 million passengers and 3.2 MMT of cargo per annum once fully developed. This long-term vision positions NMIA as a critical piece of infrastructure for India’s future economic and social development.
IndiGo’s commitment to expanding its reach from NMIA, offering both domestic and international destinations, is a testament to its strategy of making air travel accessible to the maximum Indian population. This network expansion is not just about commercial growth; it contributes to creating more connected and efficient cities, aligning with broader goals of sustainable urbanisation. By enabling a dual-airport system, NMIA will alleviate the chronic congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, fostering an unparalleled economic growth trajectory for the Mumbai region and the state of Maharashtra. This collaborative venture is set to unlock new opportunities, foster collaboration, and strengthen NMIA’s role as a key enabler of India’s aviation future, meticulously focused on meeting the evolving needs of modern travellers and ensuring a greener, more connected urban landscape.
