Mumbai Rail services between Mumbai and Nashik were significantly affected over the past two days as heavy rainfall led to widespread delays and cancellations of long-distance trains. Passengers travelling between the two cities faced disruption, with some trains delayed by as much as 15 hours, according to railway officials.
Senior officials at Nashik Road Railway Station confirmed that several Mumbai-bound trains that could not operate on Tuesday were cancelled for their return journeys on Wednesday. “As rainfall eases in Mumbai, train operations have resumed, albeit with delays,” said a senior official. The affected services included prominent long-distance trains such as the Mumbai LTT–Balharshah Superfast Express, Mumbai LTT–Banaras Superfast Express, Mumbai LTT–Patliputra Superfast Express, Howrah Weekly Superfast Express, Amritsar Express, Mahanagari Superfast Express, Saket Express, and Mumbai LTT–Dibrugarh Express. The disruption underlines the vulnerability of the railway network to extreme weather events, particularly during the monsoon season. Experts emphasise that while railways remain one of the most sustainable and energy-efficient modes of transport, planning for climate resilience is becoming increasingly critical. Measures such as enhanced drainage systems along tracks, improved scheduling flexibility, and advanced weather monitoring can help mitigate operational challenges caused by sudden heavy rainfall.
Railway officials have set up a dedicated helpdesk at Nashik Road Station to assist passengers with inquiries and rescheduling. Passengers were advised to check updated schedules before planning their journey and to allow extra travel time to accommodate delays. Despite the challenges, railway authorities reported that essential commuter services resumed gradually once the rain subsided, highlighting the operational resilience of India’s rail network. The extended delays impacted not only long-distance travellers but also local commuters who rely on connecting services. City planners and transport experts note that integrating real-time weather alerts with passenger information systems could significantly reduce inconvenience and enhance safety during such disruptions.
