Mumbai Modak Sagar Lake Overflows Early This Year After Heavy Rainfall in Catchment

Mumbai’s Modak Sagar reservoir in Shahapur breached its overflow mark at 6:27 am on Wednesday, significantly earlier than in previous monsoons. The early overflow signals a strong start to the city’s water security for the year, supported by consistent and sustained rainfall in the lake’s catchment area. The lake is one of the seven major reservoirs that supply water to Mumbai, and its capacity to supply 440 million litres daily is critical to meeting the city’s needs. Mumbai’s total daily requirement currently stands at approximately 3,900 million litres. With Modak Sagar now full, civic authorities are optimistic about a stable supply in the coming months.

In 2023 and 2024, Modak Sagar reached overflow levels on July 27 and July 25, respectively. This year, the early breach is being attributed to improved rainfall distribution and early-season intensity in Shahapur and surrounding areas. Officials monitoring Mumbai’s water resources confirmed this pattern, which is providing timely relief amid fluctuating climate trends. As of July 9, the combined water stock in all seven lakes stood at 10.59 lakh million litres, which is 72.61% of the total required capacity of 14.47 lakh million litres. In stark contrast, the same period last year recorded just 20.48% of total capacity — a figure that had raised concerns over water cuts and supply constraints.

According to officials from the city’s water management department, if the remaining lakes continue to receive steady rainfall in the coming weeks, Mumbai could avoid any water restrictions this year. The city needs the full 14.47 lakh million litres spread across all reservoirs to maintain uninterrupted supply until the next monsoon season. Environmental experts note that early lake overflows, while reassuring in terms of water security, must still be matched with efficient usage and leak-proof distribution. They caution against complacency, urging the city to also accelerate long-pending water infrastructure upgrades.

The Modak Sagar overflow also highlights the growing importance of catchment-area rainfall forecasting and early warning systems, which can help better manage reservoir operations and urban flood risks during intense spells. With the lake systems nearly three-quarters full, Mumbai appears to be on strong footing for the rest of the monsoon, though continued monitoring remains essential.
